TMJ Disorder

Also known as TMD or TMJD in short, this is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint and is actually a short name of this somewhat complicated scientific name of the joint. However you do not have to concern yourself with the complexity of the name but rather what it is and where is the most important. It is basically the joint which connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of the skull, which is found on location specifically at the front of the ear. It includes the muscles around the jaw, bones nerves and blood vessels. Normally, there will be two TMJs which are located on each side of the jaw.

The main function of the TMJ is coordination of the movement of the jaw especially in the activities of biting and chewing. Automatically, any disorder in this region will automatically interfere with the jaw’s flexibility. The TMJ disorder starts to show up through feelings of pain whenever chewing and even when the jaw is at rest. These disorders can last for a long time and should they be left for long without treatment, they can give rise to other even more complicated situations that can become hard to handle. Nottingham dentists are always available for consultancy and treatment and there should never be any excuse therefore for failing to respond to them.

Orthodontics, dental appliances, occlusal equilibrium (involves reshaping), mouth guard, surgical treatment, orthnroscopy (insertion of endoscope into the area) and open joint surgery are so of then techniques/symptoms that can be used to treat the TMJ disorders. In order to prevent these disorders, avoid hard foods, biting on hard objectives and chewing gum. Above all, it is advisable to adhere to dental routines that keep constant the cleanliness of your teeth especially after having meals.
